MAB, short for Assault Behavior Management, is a certification course that provides healthcare professionals with the skills they need to manage violent behavior at all stages. Under the guidance of certified and experienced trainers, MAB teaches identification, prevention, de-escalation, and remission techniques to keep health care workers, colleagues and patients safe. MAB accreditation is required for certain health care professionals in California, but is recommended for all health care practitioners who regularly treat large numbers of patients. You can find out whether you need to complete the MAB course in the next section.
WHO IS REQUIRED TO TAKE THE MAB COURSE?
As discussed in the introduction, the MAB instructor course is designed to meet the requirements of Bills AB-508 and SB1299 and California Code of Regulations Title 22. The legislation sets out a number of things that certain people need to learn (which will be covered in the next section), but what does it say about people who need to learn? In a nutshell, who should take an MAB course? Fortunately, the answer is very simple. California state law requires MAB certification (or equivalent training) for “employees regularly assigned to an emergency room or mental health department.”
As you can see, the law does not require all healthcare workers to have MAB training. Only those who work in emergency rooms or mental health departments. However, MAB training is recommended for all healthcare professionals dealing with large numbers of patients or patient families. Highly stressful medical environments are areas of high risk for aggressive behavior. The more people you work with, the more likely you are to face aggressive or potentially violent situations. When these situations arise, you need skills to deal with them. MAB certification required.
HOW LONG IS A MAB CERTIFICATION COURSE? HOW LONG IS A MAB CERTIFICATION GOOD FOR?
Most MAB certification courses last two to four hours. Upon successful completion of the MAB course, you will receive a certificate of completion valid for one year. The maximum duration of certification is 12 months as this training is required by law to be completed annually. Beware of anyone offering certifications for more than a year. Without annual training, it is a violation of California law. When your certificate expires, you will need to repeat the MAB certification process to improve your skills and become compliant.
